Eating At Night – Can It Be Done?

Don’t have junk food in the house. Period.

There I said it, now let me explain.

it’s 9pm, your feeling hungry so you go looking in the cupboards and find yourself some chocolate biscuits and you figure, ‘I’ll just have some of these to keep me going until bedtime.’

You are what you…

We have all heard the saying ‘You are what you eat’, which is pointing out if our diets consist of fast food, takeout, high sugar and fat, or if we drink too much can one really be surprised if our body doesn’t look or feel it’s best? Although this isn’t the full story, we are also what we feel, think, hear, do and believe. Following? Good, read on.

Does Anyone Really Read The Back Of The Packet?

A change of pace today, none of the group training stuff, I figure you deserve it after your all the hard work you have been putting in recently.  Today I wanted to draw your attention to two things, firstly how many calories should you consume during a day and secondly make sure those calories really count toward helping your body so it gets all the vitamins and minerals it deserves.

What’s Holding Your Body Back?

(written in part with Exercise Physiologist Dave P from Rio Tinto)

I have been in Queenstown for three days so far and covered:

  • Shotover Canyon Swing – 60m free fall, 200m swing at a whopping 150km/h.
  • Jet boat with minus 25 degree winds cruising towards rock faces at 80 km/h.
  • Quad bikes going up and down mountains, skidding around the mud, sliding through ice and generally just having a kick butt time!

Cancer – An Eye Opener For Life

It was July 3rd and I was in Sydney recovering from DJing at my friend’s 21st Birthday the night before. (Yes, I’m a normal human as well and do drink on the odd occasion) feeling fairly average as we did we decided to go out and check out what Sydney had to offer on a warm Sunday afternoon – still feeling rather sick but I put up with it and enjoyed the sunshine.

(Yeah, that’s me, DJing from the kitchen bench!)

So I fly home that night reminding myself I have to be up at 5:30 the next morning for a full 13 hour day at work. So up I get bright and early, feeling worse than I did yesterday thinking ‘There’s definitely something wrong here, I didn’t drink THAT much!’

So anyway off I go to work to train my clients – I managed to survive the first 5 hours ok, good thing it went by quickly. However, lunchtime comes around and I’m sitting on a chair because I just can’t move! I’m holding my stomach thinking it’s going to explode so trusty mum comes to pick me up and onward to my GP I go.

After careful examination he’s sure it’s my appendix so sends me off to the surgeon to get checked out, oh by the way I’m in so much agony if I move an inch I practically scream. What felt like hours in the car (apparently only 15 minutes) we arrive at the surgeon’s rooms and he checks me out. ‘There’s some kind of mass here at the base of your ribs so I will have to operate..tomorrow’

Dinner Box Challenge, or Fat Gaining Challenge?

Recently some clients of mine told me how their company had a McDonalds Value Dinner Box Challenge, so I’m going to share what your really eating when you decide to take on this monsterous meal.

In just one sitting of this mega meal you consume a whopping 2857 calories. The average daily calorie intake for a male is 2000-2500 calories while for females its 1200-1500 calories, so you can already see you’re taking in more than a day’s worth of food in just one sitting.

So let’s take a closer look at these 2857 calories. To add one kilogram of fat to your body that would require 7709 calories, so by eating the Value Dinner Box you have added approximately 384 grams to your body weight! Doesn’t sound like much, well here’s what you would need to do to burn it off:

  • 195 minutes consistent running
  • 610 minutes of sweeping
  • 487 minutes of gardening
  • 572 minutes doing a circuit class (of course you burn more when you have a personal trainer!)

So now that we can see how long it would take to burn off every calorie, this brings me to my next point – portion control. We have spoken about this before where you want to be eating every 2-3 hours in order to keep your metabolism burning all day long. Well guess what happened after this massive meal? Most likely there was no food consumed for several hours after meaning your body went into storage mode and turned whatever was left into fat rather than burning it off.

While I do insist my clients enjoy what they eat and not live on strict diets there also needs to be a balance. Indulging yourself is fine on occasion you just need to think of portion size. Imagine someone who had a Value Dinner Box once a week over a year as their indulgence meal – 384 x 52 = 19.968kg added to their weight!

So what’s the trick? If you want to eat something you know you shouldn’t, don’t stuff yourself until you feel sick. Instead, enjoy it just enough until your satisfied and you and your stomach will feel much better for it after.

To a happier and healthier you,

Andrew Zagami
